AWS ER308/308H is a high-quality chromium-nickel stainless steel filler wire/rod crafted for MIG (GMAW) and TIG (GTAW) welding of austenitic stainless steels, including types 301, 302, 304, 305, and 308. The filler metal typically features chromium (about 19.5–22.0%), nickel (9.0–11.0%), manganese (1.0–2.5%), silicon (0.30–0.65%), and controlled carbon levels — with ER308 generally having carbon ≤ 0.08%, while ER308H contains a bit more carbon (around 0.04–0.08%) to enhance its high-temperature strength.
When applied, ER308/308H weld metal provides impressive mechanical strength (with a tensile strength of about 90,000 psi / ~620 MPa) and good elongation (often around 38–41%), resulting in ductile, tough, and corrosion-resistant welds that are ideal for stainless steel fabrications. This filler excels in environments where both corrosion resistance and mechanical reliability are crucial, such as in chemical-processing equipment, food industry setups, general fabrication, and structural components.
